In Paris, France of July 1942, during the beginning of World War ll, the French police would go door-to-door arresting Jewish families. On this night the Vel’d’Hiv’ roundup occurred. Sarah Starzynski is a ten-year-old girl who was arrested during the roundup, along with the rest of her family except Michel, her younger brother. She locked him up in their secret cupboard in an attempt to protect Michel, thinking she would return. As Sarah and her parents are taken away to the center she soon realizes it may take much longer than she expected to free her brother from their hiding place.

Fast forward sixty years later, Julia Jarmond is a American journalist living in an apartment in France. A strange occurrence of events, and the anniversary of the Vel’d’Hiv’ roundup lead her into a path of determined investigation. Following the historical trail, Julia uncovers many secrets that the French people, and a family have been trying to keep buried for years. Because the roundup is not a point of pride in French history, many people discourage her in her investigations in attempts to not draw attention to this horrible event that happened so long ago, but Julia is determined to find the truth. Along with trying to discover more about this little girl, Julia starts to question her own romantic future. Sarah’s Key is a great story that will both keep you on the edge of tears and intrigued as the past unfolds and the present adapts.
