The Fault in Our Stars is a story about cancer kids. The story starts off with Hazel Grace introducing herself at the support group her mother signed her up. Hazel Grace is a 17 year old girl who suffers from a terminal form of thyroid cancer that had spread to her lungs, which forces her to have a portable oxygen tank with her at all times. During one meeting at the support group, Hazel met a teenage boy, Augustus Waters whom she soon grew attracted to. Augustus was there to support Isaac, who had a tumor in one eye and had it removed. After the meeting, Augustus went up to Hazel and told her that she look similar to the girl from V for Vendetta. Hazel started to dislike him when Augustus pulled out a cigarette and put it in his mouth. She was offended because her lungs were failing her, and Augustus was wasting his.

When they parted ways, they both agreed to read each others’ favorite book. Hazel suggested An Imperial Affliction, while Augustus lends her The Prince of Dawn. Later that night, Augustus called Hazel to discuss about An Imperial Affliction. Hazel ended up summarizing the story for him, describing how Anna has cancer and she’s reading about how Anna live her life. Hazel ranted to Augustus that the ending ended with mid-sentence, incomplete. Hazel wonders about Anna’s mom, if the con-man is actually a con, and all the other characters that didn’t have an ending. After a week, Augustus surprised Hazel by announcing that he had discovered where Peter Van Houten and his assistant email addresses. Later that night, Hazel emailed Peter Van Houten asking him about the ending, in which he replied that he can only tell her the ending in person. The story then progresses as the two plans their trip to Amsterdam.
